RESUMO

This paper explores the impact of health communication using smartphones and the outcome of healthier purchases when young Thai consumers shop for groceries. A conjoint experiment was arranged whereby participants (n = 214) purchased grocery using information conveyed via quick response (QR) codes. Results show that a healthy food label, and a good consumer rating on the food's health, evoked the consumers' tendencies towards interacting with a smartphone in the purchasing situation. In addition, likelihood of buying increased. Further simulations revealed that health communication conveyed via QR codes can be a good investment for brands to increase healthier purchases.

BACKGROUND: Vaping-associated lung injury is a newly emerging disease process with the potential for serious health implications and high mortality, even despite the lack of underlying lung disease. We present a case of a young, otherwise healthy patient with tetrahydrocannabinol vaping-associated lung injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old Caucasian man with a past history of tetrahydrocannabinol vaping and benzodiazepine and methamphetamine abuse presented to the emergency department of our institution with a complaint of "feeling malnourished" over the past 5 days, along with associated fevers, cough, and vomiting. His past medical, surgical, family, and social histories were significant only for the recent use of marijuana vaping pens. Upon initial presentation, the patient appeared to be in significant respiratory distress. A computed tomographic scan of his chest demonstrated diffuse central predominant interstitial opacities, and he was admitted to the medical intensive care unit, where he was eventually intubated for hypoxic respiratory failure. No other cause of his respiratory failure was found, and it was ultimately believed that the patient had sustained a vaping-associated lung injury. CONCLUSION: Tetrahydrocannabinol-containing vaping-associated lung injury is still poorly understood overall and is currently being investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the meantime, physicians should consider vaping to be a public health emergency. We summarize the appropriate history, physical examination, appropriate workup, and therapies that physicians should be aware of in order to appropriately manage and treat patients presenting with suspected vaping-associated lung injury.

This study investigated if repeated buffered acidic saline infusions into the masseter muscles induced muscle pain and mechanical sensitization. Fourteen healthy men participated in this double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled study. Two repeated infusions (day 1 and 3) were given in the masseter muscles with either a buffered acidic saline solution (pH 5.2) or an isotonic saline solution (pH 6) as control. After 10 days of wash-out, the experiment was repeated with the other substance. Pressure pain thresholds (PPT), pain intensity, maximum unassisted mouth opening (MUO), and pain drawings were assessed before, directly following, and after each infusion at 5, 15, and 30 min and on day 4 and 7. Fatigue and pain intensity were assessed after a one-minute chewing test 30 min after infusions and day 4 and 7. Acidic saline induced higher pain intensity than control day 3 up to 5 min after infusions, but did not affect PPT. The chewing test did not evoke higher fatigue during chewing or MUO or after acidic saline infusion compared to control. Repeated acidic saline infusions in the masseter muscles induced a short-lasting muscle pain without mechanical hyperalgesia or functional pain. Hence, this model might not be superior to already existing experimental muscle pain models.

Segmented poly(urethane urea)s (PUUs) with hard segments derived only from methyl 2,6-diisocyantohexanoate (LDI) without the use of a chain extender have previously been described. These materials, which contain hard segments with multiple urea linkages, show exceptionally high strain capability (1600-4700%). In the study reported here, the rate and effect of hydrolysis of these materials were determined for gamma-sterilized and nonsterilized samples. Materials investigated contained PCL, PTMC, P(TMC-co-CL), P(CL-co-DLLA), or P(TMC-co-DLLA) as soft segments and, as well as their mechanical properties, changes in mass, inherent viscosity (I.V.), and thermal properties were studied over 20 weeks. Results showed that the degradation rate was dependant on the soft segment structure, with a higher rate of degradation for the polyester-dominating PUUs exhibiting a substantial loss in I.V. A tendency of reduction of tensile strength and strain hardening was seen for all samples. Also, loss in elongation at break was detected, for PUU-P(CL-DLLA) it went from 1600% to 830% in 10 weeks. Gamma radiation caused an initial loss in I.V. and induced more rapid hydrolysis compared with nonsterilized samples, except for PUU-PTMC. A cytotoxicity test using human fibroblasts demonstrated that the material supports cell viability. In addition, an in vivo biocompatibility study showed a typical foreign body reaction after 1 and 6 weeks.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate that a grating outcoupler used for complex beam shaping (spot-array generation) can produce unintentional optical feedback that severely disturbs the integrated in-plane laser that illuminates the coupler. Simulations show that these outcouplers, in contrast to conventional collimating or focusing outcouplers, tend to produce high levels of feedback in spite of the detuning used to suppress feedback. Further, this feedback is focused to high intensity in the laser gain medium. This focused light acts as a seed for the nonlinear self-focusing that causes wave-front distortion and filamentation, which degrades the beam quality.
